O Little Town

Down Ampney church
Down Ampney in Gloucestershire, Ralph Vaughan Williams' birthplace, after which he named his tune for 'Come down, O live divine'

O Little Town is the title of my book about hymn tunes and the places that inspired them.

Everyone knows some hymns.

But unless you've sung in a church choir you may not realise that hymn tunes have titles, which usually have nothing to do with the words of the hymn.

Did you know that the tune for Dear Lord and Father of mankind is called REPTON? Or that the tune for Come down O love divine is called DOWN AMPNEY?

What's more, many of the best-known tunes are named after places. Repton is a place near Derby. Down Ampney is in Gloucestershire.

In the book I explore the stories behind the hymn-tunes and how they came to be associated with the places they are named after.
